AIDS Awareness
Osteopathic medical students have volunteered to educate their surrounding communities about HIV and other STD.s. An AIDS Awareness High School Peer Educational series has been implemented to provide the facts to the public about these diseases. The program covers prevention, disease progression, transmission and treatment. Osteopathic schools such as the University of Health Sciences in Kansas City , MO play an active role in promoting a cure for AIDS by fundraising and participating in the city's annual AIDS AWARENESS WALK. With over 40 million people affected with HIV worldwide, SOMA is making a small but vital step towards eradicating this disease.

Domestic Violence
Abuse is a common and complex public health issue affecting an often-underestimated segment of the population. About 4 million females are battered per year, 1 every 5 seconds, making abuse the leading cause of injury to American females. 1-2 million children are victims of abuse, neglect, and molestation each year. Family members emotionally abuse 2 million older Americans each year. Since one-half of all females will be assaulted in their lifetime and one third are repeatedly battered, health care providers need to be encouraged and trained to recognize, treat and prevent domestic violence. On account of this silent epidemic, SOMA instituted programming concerning domestic violence with goals including: increasing awareness of signs and symptoms of abuse, becoming familiar with models for taking an abuse history and becoming informed about community resources.

Yellow Ribbon Campaign
Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine are physicians who treat the whole person, not just symptoms. We emphasize prevention and wellness in maintaining good health care and consider all aspects of a patient's condition, history and lifestyle before making a diagnosis.

Because D.O.s emphasize prevention and wellness to maintain good health, we support the work of the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program in its effort to stop teen suicide. Teens and youth who appear to be happy can be screaming silently in the deepest emotional pain. The Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program can save lives. Each osteopathic school will have volunteers from SOMA to visit local elementary, junior and high schools with information about this program in an attempt to prevent suicide. For more information on this program visit the website at www.yellowribbon.org.
